Transgender people of color and our allies are invited to unite for this 4 day event to celebrate each other and ourselves, to share how we worship and pray, and to educate how we can support each other on our personal and communal spiritual paths.
There will be workshops, panels, a worship service, and speakers including Minister BobbieJean Baker, Miss Major, and keynote speaker Janetta Johnson, who will be speaking about TGI Justice program: Sistah's DoinIt For Ourselves "What About Us" is a collaboration with TransSaints West Coast Region of the Fellowship of Affirming Ministries, Transgender Gender Variant Intersex Justice Project, and the Transgender Faith and Action Network of the Freedom Center for Social Justice of Charlotte, NC February 20-24 City of Refuge San Francisco, CA |

Keynote SpeakerJanetta Johnson is an Afro-American Transsexual originated from Tampa, Florida and where she worked as a Commercial Sex Worker, and walked some of the same Streets, Avenues, Boulevards, and Highways throughout State of Florida as Ilene Wornus.
She recently survived three and a half years in federal prison where she fiercely and tirelessly advocated for her own and others human rights as a transgender person. Janetta is currently a Program Coordinator at TGI Justice. Her involvement with TGI Justice Project dates back to 2006 when she served as the Interim Organizing Director in November/December '08. During that time she planned grassroots fundraisers and later put her skills to work as a Political Educator community organizer, trainer, and activist for Transgender Rights. |
Conference CoordinatorMinister BobbieJean Baker is an ordained minister at the City of Refuge UCC in San Francisco. She currently serves as the West Coast Reginoal TransSaints Minister of the Fellowship of Affirming Ministries, and Lay-Minister at Transcending Transgender Ministires of CORUCC. Min. Baker has worked for several Bay Area non-profits as a peer advocate, case manager, supportive housing manager, with certification as an HIV Risk Assessment Counselor and Domiestic Violence Specialist. She is currently a seminary student at Pacific Shcool of Relition in Berkeley, CA. Min. Baker is also sought out singer and workshop leader. www.bjbaker.webs.com

Janetta Louise Johnson
Janetta Louise Johnson is currently employed at Transgender, Gender-variant, lntersex Justice Project (TGIJP or TGI Justice Project) as one of the Program Coordinators. Her invovement with TGI Justice Project dates back to 2006. As the Interim Organizing Director in November/December 2008, she planned grassroots fundraisers and later put her skills to work as a political educator, community organizer, trainer, and activist/advocate for transgender rights.
Janetta has many years of experience working as a Transgender Services Specialist. From 1999 to 2002, Janetta was an "out loud" member of the San Francisco Department of Public Health HIV Prevention Planning Council and tirelessly worked to advocate for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta to fund Community Based Organizations (CBOs) with transgender-specific funding to shift transgender women out of the Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) category. She has also worked in various capacities in non-profit social services agencies such as a Certified HIV/AIDS Test Counselor, Prevention Case Manager, Certified Advanced Community Health Outreach Worker (CHOW), and Needle Exchange Coordinator, under the supervision of Jennifer Awa, MPH.
Having recently survived 3 1/2 years in federal prison where she fiercely and tirelessly advocated for her own and others' human rights as a transgender person, Janetta is committed to developing strategies and interventions to reduce the recidivism rate of the transgender community while on the OUTSIDE.
Nicole Witt
Nikki is a transgender woman who has experienced homelessness and isolation and has an intimate understanding of marginal ization, hardship, the importance of community, and the crucial role of peer support.
Seven years of experience working in the field of harm reduction and health promotion has given her the flexibility and ability to engage a broad range of at- and high-risk individuals in a variety of settings. To better serve clients in crisis while in congested settings and to ensure a safe environment, Nikki participated in anger management and de-escalation classes.
Nikki has worked in two drop-in centers and for six years as an HIV Testing Specialist and Counselor with Haight Ashbury Free Clinic, St. James Infirmary, and Tenderloin Health providing direct counseling and peer-based support to communities at need. Additionally, Nikki is an experienced health education trainer and peer-based support group facilitator.
Toni Scott
Toni Scott was born in 1942 in New Orleans, Louisiana to a family of 10 boys and 6 girls. She has 5 biological children, 2 boys and 3 girls, and 17 grandchildren. In 1980, Toni moved to San Francisco.
Mrs. Toni recalls it as if it were yesterday when in 1957 she was arrested for "masquerading" as a female. Sometime later, she spent 30 days in jail for accessing the women's restroom as she felt that was the only restroom for a woman to go.
Toni later ended up serving 17 years in prison for first degree murder for killing a man that violated one of her sons.
Today, Toni proudly serves as a member of the City of Refuge for 5 years, board member on the Mother's Board for 1 year, and she also thoroughly enjoys volunteering at the Mother Miller's Coffee Shop at the City of Refuge UCC San Francisco.
Rev. Jonathon Thundervvord
Rev. Thunderword is a ordained minister in the Fellowship of Affirming Ministries under the leadership of Bishop Yvette Flunder. Rev. Thunderword currently serves as the Chaplin for the Transcendence Gospel Choir the worlds 1st all transgender gospel choir", and serves as the Minister of Interfaith Outreach at the Church for the Fellowship of All People. The church for the Fellowship of all People is a interfaith, intercultural community where spirituality and social transformation meet.
Miss Major Griffin Gracy
Miss Major is the current Executive Director of TGI Justice Project of San Francisco. She is a black, formerly incarcerated transgender elder. She has been a activist and advocate in her community for over 45 years to date. She was at the Stonewall Uprising in 1969. She is a father, grandmother, mother, and grandfather to her own kids and to the transgender community as a whole. Miss Major was one of the original 12 members of the Transcendence Gospel Choir.
